Proposition 19 is the landmark initiative which seeks to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. While initially there was strong support Prop 19, it appears to be waning: in the latest field poll 49% of voters said they would vote no, while 42% said they would vote yes.
This is an emotionally charged initiative is drawing world wide attention, and both sides are passionate about their stance. The initiative would allow adults over 21 years of age to possess an ounce or less of marijuana, as well as grow their own at home. California would be the first state in the country to legalize marijuana. The initiative would also permit the use and sale of marijuana in licensed places of business.
The Obama administration stated that it would pursue “all available legal and policy options” to “vigorously enforce” the federal laws that regulate marijuana. If Prop. 19 passes, it would still be illegal under federal law, which would set the stage for a constitutional battle.
Supporters of Proposition 19 contend that the passing of the initiative would bring much needed revenue to the state of California, and possibly help correct the drug violence in Mexico by causing the prices of marijuana to drop.
Regardless of the outcome, supporters are considering Proposition 19 a win. It has opened up a public dialogue on marijuana not just in California but around the country. Arizona, Oregon and South Dakota are considering medical marijuana today, but California is getting the most attention for attempting to legalize marijuana outright.
It will be interesting to see what happens. Thus far it is too early to tell which way it will go. Proposition 19 Map Election Results|November 2, 2010|California Secretary of State
